Techniques
I wait for a subject to reach out and arrest me in my tracks. Staring at it, I try to grasp what it is that creates such a strong desire to memorialize it in paint. Then I ask myself “what can I convey to my viewer with my unique voice?” I then photograph my subject in the most interesting lighting. I may draw, then paint my subject in a variety of media to further study and to gain intimacy. I experiment with monochromatic, tonal, layering, wiping off, glazing, and abstract techniques using graphite, charcoal, pastel, acrylic, oil and encaustic beeswax. Once I’m able to see my vision appearing, I remain focused on painting an original… from my true self.
Inspiration
Each day, as I meander along the walking paths in my sanctuary garden, or on the beach at sunset,
I am struck by the over-the-top palette of sun light and dappled shadows sparkling through the petals or through the breaking waves.
I have been called to communicate on canvas, what I felt at that moment when the colors were so vivid and the shapes of light and shadow so seductive.
Using my artistic voice to translate the language of allure, mood and mystery of the natural world, is what inspires me.
